Could put my hand on it anyplace, except door, and it was not hot, even when temp in the oven was 900+.

I’m slowly getting there. I sourced some ceramic fibre oven insulation instead of sand.
One of the welders on the shop floor is welding it up for me during lunch times. I feel like I’m watch someone build a smoker and not me building one but the more I watch, I realise it may have taken me forever.
Here are some progress pics.

Lookin' good.
I'll bet you are looking forward to smoke rolling out of it...

Nearly finished this build. Just clean, paint and season.
I have a question about the paint. I know it’ll be high temp black paint, but is there a difference between standard high temp paint and stove/bbq high temp paint?
I will not be painting the inside but I am worried about fumes coming in from the air inlets, as they may get hot, and moving up through the cook chamber.

I didn’t paint inside of my firebox and cook chamber. Most commercial units are painted inside and out. When I seasoned mine, I washed the inside of both chambers with Dawn to cut any oil on the metal. I then ran it wide open, 350*+ for about 2 hours to further burn off any crap then backed down the temp and started spraying the cook chamber and shelves with cooking spray, let it run for a bit, spray it down again and let it run, 3 times maybe, I can’t remember. I then did a biscuit test to see how even the heat was and ate the biscuits. I didn’t die and didn’t notice any off flavors. Heat rises, your vents look to be on the side and shouldn’t see any direct fire so you shouldn’t have any issues
