The base on my 20x24 grill finally rusted out and needs to be replaced. I live in the Spring, TX area and wonder if anyone knows a welder nearby who would take on this job. The base I have is very similar to the pic so I don't think it's a very big job. Please PM me if you can recommend someone nearby. I had one quote but thought it was a bit high (for a couple hundred more I can buy a new pit).

I’m pretty sure there are some guys in your area. I know Grailsback is in Cypress which isn’t too far.

I feel your pain.
Many big shops don't want to mess with small jobs, so quote you a high price.
If you accept, then it's worth there time.

Rolling a piece of flat bar into a ring is a decent chunk of work. A rectangle or square would be a lot easier to fabricate. If you weren’t opposed to the redneck look, you could probably find a steel truck rim for pretty cheap and that takes a lot of work out of it. What was the price quoted?

Do you have some pics of your pit I would like to see it and what is entailed in the job.
Actually if you went to a welding/fabrication shop that is not a bad price considering their overhead. I do a lot of work for friends and negotiate my prices with things like I keep the excess stock and you pay for my consumables but I have no overhead and consider them fun projects.

Hopefully this works. Its about a 20" diameter base and 1 1/2 or 2" angle iron. The post can be salvaged except for maybe the bottom 2".

You could use a piece of 20" pipe as the ring.
The job can be done for less than your quote you just need someone other than a shop. There would still be material costs involved no doubt.
If you were closer to me I would be glad to fix it I live in Vidor that is a hike lol.
Call Jose over at Pits by JJ and see if they can fix you up.

Thanks, k.a.m. I was actually thinking about taking it over there.

Update: I took the stand over to Pits by J.J. and they said it would be a simple job. They gave me a VERY reasonable price and said they'd have it ready by Saturday. While I was there, I fell in love with the Mini Contender upright smoker. That is a really nice smoker. If I didn't already have their offset smoker, I'd be getting this one for sure.

If you need it done again in the future you might save some money by using a fabricated angle ring for the base ring.
