Newbie Questions
Hi Hope Everyone is doing great. I am Getting Ready to Build My First Offset Smoker from a 250 Gal Propane Tank. I've been Doing some research and According To Feldons Calculator the Throat Opening on my Smoker will need to be 19 inches. Can anyone tell me If that is Square inches. I plan on cutting a Half moon Opening for the throat. So Would It be 19 inches at the widest Part of the Half Moon? Also Have any of you ever used a pie e of another Propane Tank for the Fire Box? Is it too thin? Would it cool to quickly? I want to do it right the First time. Thanks for all your Help and if you're ever down in Southeast Texas, well just stop on By and see what the Fatman's Cookin

Yes that opening would be 19" wide x 9.5" tall.
This seems small for a 250 build what size firebox are you running?

K.A.M. Thanks for taking time to reply. I'm following Feldons so according to The Calculator a 24" Diameterx 43" Length. The Smoke Stack will be 6" Pipe.
Although I Havent settled on Round or Square for my Fire Box. If I go Square I believe it was 27x27.

If possible I would go 28" squared and have my opening at 23" wide x 11.5" tall with a 2" to grease bridge.

k.a.m. I'm definitely willing to Lean on Your Experience....and like I said definitely a newbie to building Pits. So what is a Grease Bridge? Is that a Plate above the Opening or throat that extends a few inches into the cook Chamber?
Thanks again for your Time and Responses.

Re: Newbie Questions
The grease d-a-m goes in the bottom of the cook chamber to keep grease from getting in the firebox. Cope the bottom to fit the tank, have it 2 inches tall in the center.
I spelled it like that because the censor changed d-a-m to darn.
The 2 inch tall grease d-a-m changes the 11.5 inch opening to 9.5. The d-a-m goes right up against the firebox.

@k.a.m. How hard is it to add one of those to an existing pit?

Kind of a side topic, but you need a grill that gets to 500f or above, preferable above.
You need a pizza stone or a pizza steel.
Pizza stone should be designed for a grill, usually 3/4" thick.
You can google them to find one that works for you.
LSG 20x42 Pellet Smoker (on order), CampChef PGXXL pellet smoker, Emozione Pizza Oven, CampChef Griddle

It depends on if the area is accessible. I have added them to cookers with no problem just clean up the area to weld it in.
