Sprung door

Postby barrel_proof_parable » Fri Jul 22, 2022 7:05 pm

Hey all,
Having a good time building my first and last 20" pit.

Ran into a problem where the pipe sprung though. Hammer and beads inside haven't fixed it. The end caps were welded on prior to cutting out the door.

I drew some red lines to emphasize the way it's sprung. Any advice very appreciated!

Hang tight; there’s some people here who can help when they see this. It may be a day or 2

I’m guessing the center is sprung outward. If you out a straight edge along the edge from the i side, how much is the center bulged? 1/2”? 1”? And is the door/cut out piece sprung an equal amount? You could possibly heat areas with a torch then quench with a wet rag which will cause the metal to shrink and flatten out but it could be a long process to work 4 different areas ( top and bottom edges of the body and top and bottom edges of the door). I’m assuming you will be adding some flat stock to the door to create an overlap? If so you could affix high temp stove gasket material to the flat stock and it could help seal it up.

I need to see a pic of the door in the closed position.

The fix:
Since the main pipe is .25" thick, I got a .25" thick piece of flatbar, 1.5" wide. And then on the lower door opening, cut out 1.5" down, across the whole length of the door opening. Then welded the flatbar in place. Turned out well!

Probably could've used a center bar and just pulled the barrel in and attached it to the center bar. It would also help support the center of the grate if you were using a single grate.
