Best Offset Smoker for under $1,000?

Postby AKMIMNAK » Wed Aug 02, 2017 7:48 pm

I'm looking to step up from my Weber Grill and Pit Barrel into something a little more serious. I want charcoal/wood heat and under $1,000. I don't want another drum smoker.

From what I can find, only Yoder's base model, the "Cheyenne" meets these criteria. Looks like all the other mid-level players are only offering pellet grills (Traeger, Green Mtn, RecTec, Pit Boss, etc.). Am I missing a brand/model I should be considering? Again, I can't spend an arm and a leg, but need something under $1,000. Thanks for your input!

Best plan is to watch Craigslist like a hawk and snag a $2000 unit for $1000 or less when somebody has to move or gets tired of it..

Good input, thank you! Hopefully since I'm moving to Minneapolis, Craigslist will be a little better-stocked than the rural area I live now.

Any particular brands/models you guys would particularly recommend I try for?

Stay away from that one. My other son is an assembler and goes around to all these stores putting grills and bikes and stuff together. Says those rarely match up good. Require alot of gaskets and sealing for proper fit.

I just sold an Old Country Pecos for $300..Some felt heat tape sealed it up just fine and I had no build quality issues whatsoever.
My issue was with how it cooked, uneven heat and as I learned as I was selling it, the smokestack needs extending..

But i thought these were welded together? At least thats what i got from the review. Never seen it in person butI saw the Pecos and it was welded pretty good.

Yeah Chas I heard they cook uneven too. I guess thats why they sell the tuning plates, knowing they probably got complaints or request for them.

If you are looking to step up your game, can I suggest a Humphrey's vertical cabinet. Their Weekender line starts at $699.00.
