Vertical Cabinet charcoal smoker

Postby bobcat1 » Wed May 01, 2019 11:43 am

Think I am getting closer to what I want in my next toy. Ima thinking insulated vertical cabinet smoker that burns charcoal. Standard weekend cook would be brisket ribs, chicken and pork tenderloins and occasionally some sausage.

What manufacturers should I consider?

I’m no expert and I guess it depends on your budget: seems like Limey or Papa Tom had some knowledge on those. The only 2 that come to my feeble mind is Stumps and Fat (or Fast) Eddie

Give Pitmaker a look, they have a couple of different sizes. I have never used one myself, but you see a lot of them in this area for sure.

I think Gator Pits may have one to offer as well.

I considered Lone Star Grillz the best I saw when I was shopping. This is what I was looking at new but budget dictated I needed to buy used.

I’m very happy with my R&O Fatgirl but they are out of business. The builder re opened as El Rey Smokers but when I googled for info it looks like he might have closed down again.

That being said, when my schedule and budget allows (after my kids grow up) I will eventually go back to a true stick burner. I miss playing with the fire but just don’t have time for it right now.

From my research LSG was top of the line.

These are the ones I like but like you said they are expensive. I just don't want to have to stay up all night and babysit a fire and put a stick of wood in every 1-2 hours. I may just have to keep saving.

Have you considered a Weber Smokey Mountain or an UDS? Even if you don’t want to build an UDS there are companies that make really nice ones that aren’t crazy expensive. Woody, Gateway and Pit Barrel are the ones I can think of.

Pit Barrel was my first and I actually liked it. I gave it to my son when I got the pellet cooker. I cooked good Q on that for sure but i want to go bigger.

BC.... I would recommend you take a peek if you can. There are some trade-offs depending on the overall set-up and possibly your expectations. One thing I liked about Sooner's unit was the working height due to the cart arrangement. Not all VCS's are so equipped. It's a generous offer. :thap:
