Tejas Smokers

Postby Trooz » Thu Sep 01, 2022 10:35 am

I built a house in rural northwest Alabama back in 2003. One of my first purchases after moving in was a Tejas 2040 Deluxe Classic Chef Smoker Pit. This is not necessarily a company plug, but that's been almost 20 years ago, and literally the only thing I have replaced on the unit is the log lighter pipe. It is still going strong with no signs of stopping.

I am interested in whether any of you guys have a Tejas, and if you have experienced similar results.

I have heard of that brand but don't have any experience with it. I think that if you buy a pit with reasonably thick metal, and keep the ashes out of the fire box and slap a little paint on them from time to time you can probably get pretty good life out of most brands.

Are you on the river/lake up there? I will be coming through that area later this month. Been wanting to visit Muscle Shoals as well. I heard that the recording studio has been restored?

I live about 25 miles from Muscle Shoals.

I don't know of any restoration to Fame Studios, but it is definitely still there. There's also a recording studio on Jackson Highway in Muscle Shoals, and maybe that's the one that has been restored. If you are a music fan, you should check out the Alabama Music Hall of Fame near Muscle Shoals. This area is rich in music history with Elvis and Jerry Lee Lewis. Also, Florence is across the Tennessee River from Muscle Shoals, and it is the birthplace of Blues legend W.C. Handy. His old homeplace in Florence is a tourist attraction.

I tried to post photos of all I mentioned above, but I have to figure that out. I'm still playing my "New Guy" card.

Incidentally, there are two places in this area where you can get authentic Texas Barbecue. One place is in Etheridge, Tennessee. It is operated by a guy from Corpus Christi, and I will have to say it's among the best I've ever had. The other place is in Madison, Alabama. It has either closed or soon will close. That's the bad news. The good news is the owner is going to reopen on the river in Rogersville. The Grand Opening is eminent, and maybe it will be open during your visit. The owner is not surprisingly a Texan.

I will be staying in Memphis the 27th. I will have a day or so to kill before I pull into the track at Talladega the afternoon of the 29th. I know Muscle Shoals has an enormous amount of music history. I would like to get through there one day. And it looks like there is plenty of RV parks in that area. I have been to Memphis before, so hopefully my wife doesn’t want to spend the extra day there before we go to the track. If I have to maybe I will go to the Peabody and give the ducks a kick in the pants.

Sometimes I have more fun in the State of Alabama than the law allows.

Not sure, but I believe they’re too big.

How about an Old New Guy Requiring Assistance card?

I was coming dangerously close to giving validity to all those horror stories about an Alabama public education.

Getting it ready for the Alabama - Texas Game on 10 September. I hope that disclosure about my college football loyalty doesn’t get me banned.

That’s a nice little ole pit for its age. You’ve done well looking after that one.

To be honest I personally don’t care much for Sabin. That said I haven’t liked UT since Darrel Royal. My blood and a few others around here runs crimson and cream.
Seriously though I hope Bama hangs 80 on them.
Good luck and roll tide, roll big.

I didn't much care for Saban when he was at LSU. I respected him, but I didn't care too much for him. I'm glad he's our guy, though.
