Back to the original question.
Yes I have used gels to start grill fires. The ones I used are alcohol based so not really different than 151.
They ere safe but considering the cost and all I moved to other methods listed here.

History lesson, before Traeger started using a "hot rod" lighter gel was THE method to start your pellet pit, I still have one but it has been updated to electric start.

Thank you everyone. Papa Tom, very informative, tank you (best Sicilian I can do!)
Wooden, I like your suggestion, just can't bring myself to burn 151 Bacardi unless it Is going down my throat and giving me an incredible buzz! Having grown up in Puerto Rico I have a healthy respect for 151, my Dad taught me to sip the stuff as well as scotch by age 10 … yes that was over Thanksgiving while roasting three turkeys over an open pit with the homemade rotisserie. Geez, just remembered why I like an adult beverage or however many when I am grilling
Cheers everyone!!!

I have used a MAPP torch for the last several years. Even on my Weber if doing plain charcoal.

I ball up a paper towel, from the rolls with the short sheets, put a little cooking oil on it and light it up. Works great, every time.

Its funny you say that because when I referenced the 151 the Everclear was right next to it.
That is for sure some good stuff, but its too precious for me cuz its my go to for cold and flu season :):)
