planning a UDS

Postby TwoGuysBBQ » Mon Dec 10, 2018 1:46 pm

I am in the gathering and planning stages of building a UDS. I had a question about the air intakes. I was planning on going with three 3/4" intakes spaced accordingly. my questions after looking around online what are the differences with the intakes at ground level and placed-piped up high? are there any differences? :banghead:

My understanding is the pipe extensions are to keep fat boys like me with bad backs from bending over (losing their breath and passing out) while adjusting the exhaust.

This is just my limited knowledge from when I was going to build one. Unfortunately I never got around to it.

Not sure if Big Ed still comes around and checks on the forum but he is the UDS guru. Builds and competes (successfully) with UDS. Makes a heck of a charcoal basket too.

Follow this. I am also thinking of building one but have no knowledge of it so far. Hope to pick up a few hints. Good luck.

I have read the extended intakes have to be larger in diameter to draft well. I'm about to start scrounging parts for another one myself.

No hi-jack intended but I've been thinking about when my ECB breathes it's last breath, a UDS might be the ticket. However, Capt'n Jack would be putting a contract out on me 'cause I have promised to get a 22" Old Smokey next. Don't tell him but I may just check these old Boys out down the road from me. https://www.facebook.com/outbackwoodpecker/

I got hold of an old red weber kettle that I will cannibalize for parts, specifically the lid. Payed 45 usd for it. Found also a new drum without lid for 45 usd. The rest of the parts are easier to get. Would be very happy if you would share any progress to follow.

Yes Sir, The trains left the station and parts are being fabricated. getting a basket made with an ash pan, a couple dividers for the basket and a heat deflector plate.
The drum is also at the sandblasters getting cleaned up. I still need to buy/find all the pipe for the draft and exhaust and ball valves along with the high heat paint.
oh and handles along with a temp gauge.
still a ways to go but at least the trains going down the track.

A friend of mine told me about this link on you tube that is a pretty good tutorial on putting one together, although his way of measuring is quite unique. Still a good series i think its totaled at four videos and a great looking UDS Smoker.

I'm not building mine exactly but you get a strong idea of how to build one.

I was looking on you tube and found quite a few videos on building a UDS. I think if i started making one the wife would throw a fit. She couldn't understand why I wanted to make a second smoker. So I told her because I can!!! Ha HA Good luck on your builds.

It's obvious to me that you need more equipment. I think you should build two :laughing7:
