Bigger drum build

Postby Fooldancing » Fri Dec 21, 2018 4:26 pm

As most of you know, I built a 30gal uds this past summer. I'm going to move up to a 55gal by spring. I have the drum, but I am wondering if it's ok to use an aluminum lid? I have access to a drain pan made out of a cut end to a semi truck fuel tank. Now I know I shouldn't cook over aluminum, I'm just not sure if this would be ok. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

On a side note I would be doing a thorough cleaning and burning out of the drum and aluminum "lid".

It's around 26" in diameter. It would fit over top with the drum lip still intact and should be heavy enough to make a descent seal....I think so anyway..lolImageImage

PK grills are made out of aluminum so it must be ok to cook with aluminum. In fact I had a aluminum dutch oven years ago that I cooked in many times.

I think if it was galvanized then you would have a problem. I use aluminum cooking trays all the time in my smoker.Good Luck on your build.

This is good to know guys, thanks. heck, I've even pictured building one out of a semi truck fuel tank. It's had to come up with a fuel tank that doesn't have a core charge though....lol
