replacement meat probes , how long do they last

Postby planohog » Sun Dec 22, 2019 10:02 am

inkbird IRF-4S Wireless Remote, It came with one probe that seems to be just
a heat measurement probe. Its worked flawless for probably 15 cooks.
The smaller very pointed end probe, I lost the original after 3 cook, 225F
I bought two replacements, and lost one of those on second cook. 225F

the symptom is the read will be stuck , one of them is 148F , the other is 267 F.
not matter what the actual temp is. That can scare you if your depending
on it to make cooking decisions. Fortunate for me at that time I was paying
attention, and quickly put in old fashioned meat probe to see what was really going on .
I think I will stick to the probes without the beveled end .
Any ideas or thoughts .

Inkbird Stainless Probe Replacement for IRF-4S

side note: the probes that some with pitboss will not fit in inkbird.

Are the wires getting crimped when you close the door or are you going through a port? I wrap mine in foil where they close in my smokers door. This was at the recommendation of one of the manufacturers (can’t remember which one) of temp probes.

I have not done that yet, I might start fishing them down through the smoke stack.
That might be why my oven prob works so good, never smashed in the door.

I drilled a small hole on the back side near the bottom of my smokestack to insert and remove the temperature probes. Drilled near the bottom to reduce the length of probe wire needed to get probes onto the food grate (also makes it easier to see the probes with the food chamber open if you need to pull them through), and drilled on the back so that it isn't apparent from the front. In addition to these reasons, I chose the smokestack because it is 1/8" thick while the smoker is 1/4" thick (Gator Pit). Hole diameter is about 3/8", just big enough to insert the 2nd probe with the wire from the 1st probe already in place.

Works great- the amount of smoke that "weeps" out the hole with two probe wires occupying most of the open space is miniscule. At first I inserted a small plug of aluminum foil but soon learned that was unnecessary. One of my probes is still the original (Maverick) and is 10+ years old with fairly heavy use.

Hope this helps,
